Is Cherophobia blocking your success?
If you are not familiar with the term, it refers to those afraid of allowing themselves to be happy or “too happy”, certain something negative or tragic will happen.
It is more common than you may think. In severe cases, the thought of letting themselves be relaxed and happy can provoke acute anxiety.
There are of course varying symptoms and degrees of severity. When it exists, based on my experience, rarely has it been formally diagnosed as cherophobia. For most reading this, it will come as no surprise that according to psychologists it commonly occurs due to extreme mind restlessness, trauma events, and various emotions. I bring this to your attention since it is only logical that the initial focus would more than likely be on resolving those issues, possibly unaware that the fear of happiness is even an issue. Well, at least in the beginning!
Whether you are working Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT or Tapping) or similar modalities and progress seems excruciatingly slow or stymied, if this fear particular fear doesn’t surface on it’s own, it is time for a little detective work. Ask a few questions like “What would change for you if you didn’t have this ______?” or “Who do you think wouldn’t like it if you were happy and free?” and “Who or what are you afraid of losing if you let this go?” You’ll be surprised at some of the responses you’ll get.
Here are a few response examples:
One client was convinced it would lead to being deserted by their family – left alone in the
world. The fear meant they needed support and if that was no longer the case….
Another felt certain they’d end up blindsided, more devastated than ever if they dared
allow themselves the luxury of feeling happy and carefree – leaving them unable to care
for loved ones.
Yet another – sincerely believed that the more they worried and fretted, the more they
and their loved ones would be kept from harms way.
There are many fears of letting go of our fears, so patience and persistence, being sure to “sweep out the corners” will definitely yield great benefits for achieving the desired success and sense of fulfillment.
The cumulative impact of various life experiences shapes the writing on the walls of our subconscious mind, the way we see ourselves, view others and the world. It is important to remember we have the power and the ability to change it at anytime, since we all remain a work in progress….
By generating peace within, we generate peace.
Peace out! Be well, be happy…
